Fight for your rights

Canadian women, watch out: I think there’s someone out there presuming to be boss of your uterus. No, it’s not a flashback; this is 2012.

Dear readers, even if your sexual orientation may not allow you to procreate with your better half, I think you should be paying attention to a very disturbing situation. In late April 2012, the government will decide on a motion tabled by Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth.

Motion M312 aims to review the definition of “human being” as it is stated in the Criminal Code of Canada to accord legal status to a child at conception. As you may have guessed, such a definition will be infinitely harmful, eliminating a number of legal rights and protections for pregnant women in one fell swoop.

It is very worrying to see that criminalization of abortion seems to be on the Conservatives’ agenda. To see a government take such retrograde steps is utterly enraging, even downright menacing.

As a lesbian woman, I think immediately of another right I have as a Canadian/ Québec citizen: the right to marriage between people of the same sex. Is this also on the list of decisions to review?

Regardless of whether I want to get married or not, regardless of whether I want to have kids, I think Motion 312’s announcement is a concern for each and every one of us.

The Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada (ARCC) has some proactive solutions: Sign a petition or write to your MP.

Be informed!
