Book launch for Archives Lesbiennes

Leave your thoughts

On April 22, during Lesbian Visibility Day at Bain Mathieu in Montreal, the Quebec Lesbian Network is launching the book Lesbian Archives in a format available for purchase!

To see yourself exist. The Lesbian Archives book project stands out for the simple fact of having been created. The two volumes of Lesbian Archives will take you across the globe to land in Quebec and introduce you to the history of people and women of sexual diversity too often overlooked. A major project that was made possible thanks to the participation of many folks in our communities. Volume I includes Greek mythology, Indigenous community realities, feminist history, legislative rights, political gains, and more.

As for volume II, it offers a review of major events, in particular the “decriminalization of homosexuality” in Canada with a return to the omnibus bill of 1969, but also covers other important events such as the creation of the Coop-Women, the vigil organized by militant lesbians, the Polytechnique events in 1989, the creation of the magazine Les Sourcières, the creation of the radio program Lesbo-sons, or the coming out of several important women in the public sphere, to name a few.

Dominique Bourque and Line Chamberland form the advisory committee and commented on the entire book written by Julie Vaillancourt. Dominique Bourque is a professor at the Institute of Women’s Studies and the French Department at the University of Ottawa, she is the head of Éditions Sans Fin and has written several important articles on feminism and lesbian movements since the early 2000s. Line Chamberland, a sociologist by training, notably wrote the eponymous work Mémoires Lesbiennes, she was co-holder and holder of the Research Chair against Homophobia at UQAM and is an essential reference for LGBTQ2S+ movements in Quebec, but also in Canada. Julie Vaillancourt wrote the book as communications officer for the Quebec Lesbian Network.

Don’t miss Lesbian Visibility Day on April 22!
